R8 collet brands - seeking just a little advice

Well, I just bought a Lyndex 5/16" R8 on eBay for about $20.00. At .0007" TIR, I figure that will be good enough for my
purposes./QUOTE]

That sounds like a lot. Lyndex are excellent quality.....did you buy new or used?

A fair question...the eBay listing that I purchased said it was brand new, and offered free shipping. The price was $19.95.

I can't recall where I read it,but i remember that Lyndex's aren't what they used to be.

Since replying last night, I decided to do a little further checking. My Lyndex R8 collets average about .0002 run out (I checked 3) & that's about the same as my spindle run out. Have you checked for spindle run out? The boxes are marked Made in Japan but there is no guarantee that they are not outsourcing too. It makes it hard to buy when you can't rely on country of origin/quality. The price of good quality tooling is a killer but .0007 won't do. If your spindle checks out, I would return the collet for a refund.

I must have had good luck with my Chinese or Taiwan collets. I have only ever bought 1 that wasn't quite true. And it had about 1/32" runout!!

I will warn that I think the Asians CAST EVERYTHING. My journeyman broke a #3 MT to R8 adapter. It was definitely cast from the rough fracture on it. I don't know if they cast R8's. I've never broken one,but if it is possible to cast them,I'll bet they do it.

Question on R8 collets: Why do some r8 round collets have a step that prevents full insertion of a tool? I bought some Hardinge r8 collets for a low price in great condition and you can insert a tool as far as the collet is long, no restriction on shank length, which is great. While others have a step that prevents or limits the depth that you can insert a tool. Are these r8's what they call stepped collets?
