You may remember this pic of me using my 4 jaw chuck held in my 3 jaw.

This kind of works. But it's not right.

What if I took this.

And this

The screw is out so it can mount in the 3 jaw.
Of Course, I'd remove the old mount on the chuck.

And did this?

faceplate and chuck backside.jpg

What should I look out for? Should I do it?

Thank you for looking!

That looks to be part of an automatic transmission drilled for balance. Drilled a LOT. I would throw it out and buy a new one if rebuilding that tranny. I just did in fact. I doubt they achieved balance and imbalance is a bad thing on a chuck. Just my 2cents. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm fairly certain that it's a small faceplate. The taper fits my lathes spindle.

It does look like a balanced faceplate to me. Not sure who made it, looks crude in the way the slots were cut. Just my opinion.

Just wondering Dan, sticking a four in a three is just another day around here. Times when we need a face plate like 25" dia. we chuck up
a drill press 'round table' in the GK (of course we refaced it) all I can say is if Keith Fenner does it, then its getter done appove'ed .

Yeah, I saw Keith doing it one time! LoL! That was after I did it!

I don't have a dog to go with the faceplate, and I think I'd use the 4 jaw more than a faceplate. Also, even though the 4 jaw seems to be solidly mounted in the 3 jaw, it makes me a little nervious. It would be nice to have the correct mounting on the 4 jaw.

I see what you are trying to accomplish, and probably trying to do it at little to no cost, which I am all for. But why not just buy a new chuck backing plate threaded for your spindle and then mount it to your 4 jaw. It would be in better balance, and once you spin it on you would just make a clean up cut to face it. These backing plates can be had pretty cheap on ebay and elsewhere. When you buy a new chuck you usually have to choose a backing plate for it, just buy the plate and not the chuck. Maybe look at what shars or the other imports have to offer?

Thanks for the comment!

Do you think the chuck would be any worse for ballance than this?

I don't think I'll have a use for the faceplate. It fits my headstock.
