A buddy wanted me a make a driveshaft for a derby car from a pto shaft. I tried to talk him out of it but to no avail. I made the ends fit a gm 10-12bolt pinion flange. Made it from 3/4" plate as I had no round stock of that diameter and plenty of scrap plate.

Started putting the 3 axis DRO on the HF 12x36" lathe. Nice work on the jacks. I have made a set of 4 that have a ball type top. I need I to make an ajustable top from 3/4" mystery metal that I found today. They will interchange with a jack I bought. Also tried a gear cutter on the home-made holder. It ran smooth and I could hardly tell it was cutting. Makes me want to finish the indexer I have been working on.

Got some time behind the hood today. I burned fifty two .125" 7018 electrodes. I learned alot on my first welding project.

I know restrikes are a pain with 7018 electrodes!
But I am happy with how the welds turned out. The second picture I welded the piece in this position to practice vertical up welds.

Finished the Spindle light for my PM45M-CNC.
I had a bit of a scare when did the potting with the clear resin. The expectation is that about 10-15 min after adding the catalyst it will get very hot. Well, I mixed it up and poured it into the pockets then started monitoring it with an IR gun. It never got but a few degrees over ambient. I checked the left over resin that was in a plastic cup and it was 240 degF. but the same stuff that Poured into the pockets never got over 72 degF. after a few hours it had started to set but very slowly. stiff but very tacky. I used a heat gun on the aluminum and brought got the temp around 150 or so and let it sit overnight. This morning it was hard and looked just fine. My guess is that the aluminum was such a good heat sink that it dissipated the heat generated by the chemical reaction as fast as it was being generated but that is just a guess. In the end it turned out OK.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas and suggestions. It is a lot more fun to share this experience with people who understand what is involved. :))

I figured it would warp that's why I chose 1" material. I planned from the start to machine things square after welding.

Hmmmm, are you sure it will be strong enough? I seriously doubt that you could clamp any more than 150,000 - 180,000 lbs to an angle plate like that

Brian, Nice looking welds. I take it you just added the over kill of weld for more pratice. 7018 is a bit tricky, lots of guys like to tap it on the steel, but I have found striking it like a match works best for me. I also break the flux off the end of the rod between welds. Your cover pass where the top and bottom meet on the face looks like it was too hot or you didn't hold the edge long enough. not real bad. all in all though your welds look pretty good for only having the machine a short time. Real sure they will hold fine. Be sure you have all the slag out of the weld before machining slag will kill an end mill real quick.Mark
