Micke's Swedish Orn lathe

The old Swedish LMW rotating centre still have good bearings but the tip is quite worn. So I ordered a high end centre (claimed) from India that is specified for CNC usage (high RPM and loads) and crossed my fingers... The bearings and seals are Made in Germany. It looks a lot better than I could wish. Larger than the old centre, which is not small by any means, and the look and feel of the new centre is very good.

The specs. guarantees 0,015 mm run out but the test protocol shows 0,002 mm (less than 0,0001 inch) which is extremely good if correct.

I was keen to see how high speed grinding works in the old lathe. The test object is the scarred rotating centre. The grinding worked at least as good as hoped and the tip is restored to a clean condition. The bearings feels OK so the centre can now be used.

Body cleaned with 1200 grit paper.
This will be done with the morse cone as well for a better grip and apperance.

You can't have too many tool holders for carbide inserts and HSS cutters  This is a mix of original pieces, homemade ones and some are modern holders that are modified to fit the QCTP. There is a lot more but these can represent the variation. There are also boring-bars to be fastened between the chuck and the tailstock where a workpiece is located in between.

You certainly have a lot of tooling for the machine now. I love Sweden for purchasing machines and tooling. You guys have so many machine shops and everything is so cheap compared to Norway.

Paul.

Unfortunately there are not many machine manufacturers in Sweden anymore, if any. Same with the tool industry, Bacho exist as a brand but with manufacturing in Portugal. Some tool companies like e.g. Seco Tools still exist though and make top quality tools.

I don't think everything is to blame on high salaries here v.s. labor cost in Asia. Machine engineering has lost it's former status and people prefer to work and play with computers. As I'm doing right now  But tomorrow is another day for quality time in the garage and make things since it is a long holiday here. :))

FedEx dropped the Chinese 6 jaw chuck today. It looks and feels good so it is not built in a cave. I'll minimize the run-out by locating it as optimal as possible on the back plate. The back plate begins to look like a cheese since it is adapted for different chucks now. Luckily it is a rigid piece.

The chuck is now installed. The only thing I needed to do was to center it on the back plate. A measurement showed it was perpendicular to the jaws so I didn't have to true the back. Even though it is a low cost China chuck I have no complains and it will probably serve well for hobby use.

Hi Micke. Where did you buy the new center and chuck?

Greetings from Norway:))

Hi Sharps,

The live center is bought from India, I don't hesitate to give it 9/10. I bought it here but they seems to have no presence on eBay now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251706886656?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT The same article is available from other companies though if you search by the article name, but a bit more expensive.

The chuck is from China. Absolutely OK and scores 5+ /10 over a scale from rubbish to excellent. http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/K-13-manually-6-jaws-lathe_60035469037.html
The chuck is very price worthy. It would have got higher score if all machined edges were deburred, but this is easy to do since you should always examine a new tool.
