End Of An Era...

I'd imagine one of the reasons there's no stores like that anymore is due to the wages. The employes who knew ever part were there for a long time.

We have a Fry's Electronics in our area which is like the Radio Shack of old on steroids. This place is BIG like Walmart super center big. They carry lots of electronic components some of pretty high quality like stainless PEC pots, they even carry scopes and testing instruments. They sell computers, TV's, stereos, appliances, you name it. It was originally built by Tandy and named Incredible Universe.

Hmmm... I did not know Fry's was a follow on from Incredible Universe... I remember one of those stores... A bit too splashy for me... yet cool to visit.

Fry's started in Sunnyvale, Ca in 1985, it was the ultimate computer geek store in the heart of Silicon Valley offering everything to build, experiment on, and test computers. Tandy Corp (Radio Shack's parent company) started the Incredible Universe chain in 1992, and closed them down in 1995 (1996?). They were then adsorbed into the Fry's chain.

Radio Shack used to be a place I couldn't walk past without buying something, but they strayed from their roots. When they were an electronics store that sold kits and parts, there was always something fun to buy there. Sorry to see them go, but they more or less "left" quite a few years ago.

The only trouble with those guys is that they don't know what any of it is or what the numbers mean. They sort by the whole numbers without regard for the K, M, or u (mu). It is hard to find something among a shelf full of stuff sorted only by the leading three digits. I will always purchase from Digi-Key, Mousers, Jameco, Marlin P Jones, etc.

Speaking of RS, I found an unopened flashlight. They used to give these out free with coupon. I was a kid when I got this (probably had a dozen). And like many kids who lived in the time shortly after dinosaur age, free stuff and flashlights were cool. I thought the attachments would bring back memories.
BTW: I belonged to the Battery Club also...as well as the KISS Army.

Happy Trails!

I remember those... had a few.

Found one in a box when I cleaned out Dad's house after he passed... had batteries in it and still worked... kinda...
