Today, I made an adapter ring for a friend. He's building a shooting chair, which they use when culling problem animals at night. This ring fits tightly over a 4" steel pipe and the two brass rings are to power his spot light - one positive and the other negative. I'm not sure how and exactly where this is going to fit into the completed chair, but the idea is to have brushes running on the brass to pick up continuous power for the spotlight, while the chair can be turned in all directions.
I had to make the two 12mm brass inserts from one solid brass ring, which was quite a challenge as the ring was only 30mm wide and my parting tool removes 2.2mm. This left me with very little to hold onto in the chuck. It was my first try at both plastic and brass and was a nice project that came out well.

Nicely done. From the color, I'd be willing to believe the plastic is Turcite. That's tough enough it could probably be used for for the main chair bearings.

I have 88 of these 1/4" plates that are parts for custom tie rod ends of a clevis/turnbuckle system for rafter ties in a custom built home I'm helping build. Each plate requires (3) 1/2" holes and (1) 3/4" hole. I was dreading having to drill all of those. So I made a punch and die set out of 01 tool steel in the lathe and heat treated them. I mounted them in my 20 ton horrible freight shop press, which I've upgraded with an air over hydraulic jack.

On testing the first hole I ran the jack until no more air would go into it. Nothing happened. I thought it didn't work. Then about 5 seconds later BAM! It punched through. Sounded like a gunshot went off in the shop! But the results are great, even if the process is a bit loud. I have a polyurethane stripper spring on order to finish up the tooling part of this. I've also done the calcs and the larger hole requires about 15 tons of force. I wouldn't want to push this press much higher than that.

Now I just need to punch 87 more!

Is the end of the punch chisel you made dead flat to the vertical or have you ground it to a saddle shape ? If flat , perhaps try scalloping the thing to look a bit like a saddle that way you get two cutting edges to start making the punched out hole and it won't take so much effort either as the shearing force is more concentrated on the cutting edges rather than all across the punch . Once the shear gets started the rest of the cut follows through nice & easy .

Sounds like fun if you are not on the receiving end. But here in Canada it's hug a thug. I would end up in jail before the real criminal. Laws here are so much different. As long as they don't make there way into my house while I am asleep then the crap will hit the fan.

It's the same here in the UK but you have to give them tea and cream filled biscuits plus the taxi fare home once they have stuffed your suitcases full of your stuff , just in case they injure themselves with the extra weight on the way to the pawn brokers etc. etc etc.

( I've never heard of a dead thief coming back and stealing a second time;) )
 
turcite seems to be pretty darn expensive, or it that only for turcite 'b' slideway?
 
Another project i had this winter was repairing a shaft for my freebie snowblower. Shaft was down to 1/4" from the original 1/2" size. I built it up with the mig welder. Made a cat head to spin the octagon shaft in the steady rest. The sprocket is welded on so won't fit in the spindle. Attached a lathe dog. Turned it with faceplate using wire to hold it against the center. Turned the weld to the 1/2" dia. Then used ball bearing with welded flat bar tabs to replace the brass bushing. These machining tools are so handy to have. Dont know how i lived without them before. uploadfromtaptalk1427859787064.jpg

If you live in the "love your thief" state of Pennsylvania, you have to let them rob you and get away before a crime is committed and then the police come and say" what do you want us to do about it?". And never hit them or you go to jail for assault. You have to actually let them hurt you before you can defend yourself or " you started it and get arrested ".

My house got broke into last year and the state police came and started badgering me and trying to make it my fault some jerk robbed me. I told him to get out and that is why no one wants to call you as*******. I had to pay $150 fine for disturbing the peace. ( calling someone a derogatory name in public view). Now , that's justice.
 
Where I live, it's if they are in your house they are "fair game". I also have a good dog that is very protective of "HIS HOME".

In East Texas I hear they bob the tails of alligators and paint them yellow. They call them "Texas Pit Bulls". They are very territorial........sounds like their might be a market for a few in Pennsylvania. Just tell the cops he just wondered into the yard and stayed and you were afraid to tell him to leave.

roadie33- good looking friend you have there.......I see he doesn't get to ride in your lap.........
