I want to true up my lathe tail stock. I suspect it is both too low and uneven. How do I use an indicator to measure alignment?

I intend to use shim stock for the adjustments.

Thanks
John

Can you tell us a little about your lathe? the make, size, how old is it?

BTW do you have a listing of the tooling you have for sale?

The lathe is a 1968 Logan 14 inch model 6565 It has a very standard tail stock which consist of a base plate with the tail stock aligned left to right with a screw.

I am hoping to put shim stock between the base and upper tail stock assembly to adjust the height and any angle alignment problems,

I can send a list of the tooling, but my inventory is shrinking so i am no longer certain of how many of which profiles I have in a certain size.

If you could tell me what sizes you use I could give you a better answer.12-2.JPG I think these are 1 inch
58-4.JPG These are 5/8
38-4.JPG These are 3/8

I also have many boxes of 1 inch and 1 1/4 boring bars like the smaller ones pictured. They are not easy to ship but if anyone is ever in Houston I will make you a great deal.

More than you would want to learn, but every thing you need to know.:big grin:

You bet and the OP should pay careful attention to the comments of Richard King, a guy for whom both Darrel and I have immense respect !

I am guessing that I ned to put the indicator on the tool post and extend the tailstock quill and run the indicator along the top to measure any angle errors and mount the indicator on the chuck to measure height and center.
