Three Phase Drive Question

Howdy, I bought an Automation Direct GS2-22P0 drive so I could slow down my drill press for a big hole I was boring. I programed the specs into it, voltage, amps and what not. When I tried it, it didn't seem like it was delivering enough juice. Even with the hertz all the way at 60, the motor just hummed. I tried it on a 3 phase chop saw I have and it turned the motor but it seemed a lot slower. Is the a setting outside of the motor programming I need to change or something? It must be something dumb I overlooked because I can't seem to find any others with the related issue. Everything works like a champ with my phase-o-matic phase converter. I have been a member since 2011 but I guess accounts get deleted if one doesn't post. Thanks in advance for any input.

If your P0.00 and P0.01 are set to the motor nameplate specs, then try setting P2.0 to 01, that gives it more starting torque.

I tried that, I thought the same thing. I wonder if I just got a bad unit or something...

Anything is possible. I've never had a problem with the GS2 units, but there's always a first time. They pretty much work right out of the box, after setting P0.00 and P0.01.

The only other thing I can think of is the wiring. You might look at the voltage and current on the display. It almost sounds like the unit is current limiting.

I emailed tech support to see what they say. Thanks for your input!

Jim, I think I may have figured it out. To use it, I would turn on the converter then turn the machine on when I should have let the drive turn the motor on. You think?

Ahaaaaaa! You should not have the phase converter in the circuit at all. The VFD takes a single phase input and gives a 3 phase output. Absolutely the VFD should be controlling the motor, wired direct to the motor.
