2015 POTD Thread Archive

I built a "portabench" yesterday.
First, while cleaning my parents house, I found Dad's workbench, which was made from an old office table. It had a solid wood top, but the bottom of the legs were rotten from water getting into the basement. So I salvaged the top for later use.
Second, While driving home, I found an old folding table, set out for trash, that had a bad pressboard top. However, the steel legs & frame were still good. It was an older one because the legs & frame seemed heavier than newer ones.
So...I attached the steel frame & legs to Dad's old workbench top. Now, I have a bench that can be used anywhere. I plan to keep it as-is and not refinish it. The memories will be preserved and I won't be afraid to get it dirty.

Learned how to cut a left hand internal thread

By accident

Didn't realise that direction of travel was crucial and travelled from headstock to tailstock because it was easier.

Then I didnt understand why the threaded bar would even consider mating with the internal thread and kepts shaving a tiny bit off waiting for the magic moment to occur.

This project had nothing to do with machining, but it was built in my shop and installed at a client's house. They had a woodburning fireplace that was no longer safe to use, and wanted me to design a mantel that would hide the old brick and house an electric fireplace insert. I tiled the top of the hearth and around the insert with black tiles and grout.

That looks good, I have been wanting to replace my old fire place, with a word stove of some kind but have not found one that will replace one of the cheep metal fire boxes. But your job looks great.
 
Worked for a couple of hours tonight an a Delrin Cross Slide nut for my lathe. I used Evanut's idea on how to make it.
I had some blocks of Delrin so I sawed one into 1 1/2" square. Chucked it up and turned it round. Drilled it out with a 13/32 drill, sawed it in half with the band saw. Clamped each half in the vise over the Acme rod and heated the rod while tightening the vise. It actually melted the Delrin around the rod and fused it together. Chucked Acme rod with Delrin "nut" in the lathe and turned it down to 13/16. It looks like one solid piece and the Acme rod threads in and out. It's kind of snug, so I'll throw it in the freezer to shrink it up and use a piece of Acme rod ground to recut the threads and open it up some more so it won't be so tight.
Next I need to figure out the dimensions of a piece of Aluminum to house it and get it installed.

was 13/16" the diameter of the bottom of the threads of the rod ?
 
The Acme crossfeed screw is 1/2" x 10 LH thread.
I just stopped at 13/16" until I figure out what size I will make the Aluminum mount for the crossfeed screw.
 
aah, this old guy mis read. 13/32" that should be the bottom dia. of the 1/2"-10. I'm surprised it stuck to the shaft. i will keep that in mind when i do mine. maybe some antisize would help ? that stuff must handle a few degrees. . . no ?
 
IMG_1120.JPG IMG_1124.JPG I also finished the parts for a tool post grinder for my 10"x22" I am in need for making my own HSS cutters. The power plant is a 1/4" 6 amp 120 volt die grinder (adjustable speed ) 7000-30 000 rpm no load speed . The ring section has been turned and bored, then drilled , tapped 1/4-20 NC and counter sunk to the body , the material was scrap hydraulic cylinder ram . The flat mount is just 1/2"x 2" flat bar drop from work. I am taking it to a friend who is equipped at home to do tig welding then it will be time to give it a workout. PS for anyone here in Canada , the die grinder came from princess auto. ( our version of Harbour freight )

I just used some Pam Cooking spray on the shaft. I heated the Acme rod to red hot about 3 inches from the Delrin in the vise then started cranking with one hand while holding the torch on the shaft with the other. It pressed together pretty easy and squeezed out some excess Delrin when both halves came together. When it cooled, it looked like one continuous piece with Acme threads inside.
