Sqeeeeeeky Eclipse Permanent Magnet Surface Grinder Chuck

I can't describe how much I am learning here guys! Thank you!

I am definitely not opening it up, that's for sure.

I will also be picking up a bigger surface grinder in a few weeks and applying these lessons there as well.

I wouldn't be dusting this chuck off, on this little grinder, if It wasn't new to the grinder. The grinder I am picking up has one installed, and I will be leaving that one alone for a while, unless it is way out of whack.

My walker ceramax chuck came with my harig 612, it appeared flat, he'll even the .0005 indicator didn't see it, but when I ground some parallels and checked em with my interapid tenth is when I found the problem, at that point I had already had a little time in on grinding stuff, so I just went for it. It's really easy to grind or dust the chuck, I don't remember the step over but on the harig I did about 1/3 turn, and just fed real slow and watched carefully as I neared the edge of the chuck, be warned that on a harig if you bump the stops it changes things. It can either take more or less on the next pass leaving you with an unflat surface. I did however practice by grinding a few pieces of stock chucked right at the edge of the chuck surface to prepare muscle memory. Not sure if you have done it yet, but I threw my 5c indexer on the chuck with a piece of 1/2in 4140 in it and ground the end, beatiful prism like finish. Similar to the finish of rotating a flat part to grind it rather than traverse over it. I didn't read if someone else had mentioned or not or if you already know but be sure and grind the chuck with the magnet on. As it will distort the metal ever so slightly, compared to when off.

A friend of mine, a journeyman tool and die maker, owns his own shop, says that just moving the grinder machine will throw the chuck out of whack, think about how easily a lathe bed twists. It could only be a few tenths but that's what grinders are for, working in tenths, and making perfectly flat surfaces, so it's just a matter of when your comfortable to dust off the chuck on the new machine. I bought my harig from the same friend and he told me that nothing will be flat until I dust the chuck because of the move....
