Boyds gunstocks

Here is one of my Ruger 77 rifles in a Boyds stock. While I did bed it it was near a near-perfect "drop-in" and would have worked fine without any other work.

For Laminates, Boyd's is a household name. They sell a gazillion of them.

I wonder if you could modify it to open the top of the thumb hole and make it compliant? It would feel exactly the same but would no longer have a "thumb hole".

I have fitted out a half dozen of these stocks. Mainly for Rugers, 10-22's and 77-22's. My complaints are all the same. The trigger reach is quite long. It could stand a shortening of a good half inch with no harm. My only option has been to open the thumb hole towards the trigger. Action fit is usually pretty good and easy to finish. I still pillar bed them with good results. Overall length falls into the 14 3/8" range and altered by adding a pad. Now the gripe. The laminate construction makes the stock virtually 90% edge grain. This edge grain does not seal well and soaks up finish like a sponge. I usually apply a couple coats of Benite wood conditioner with a good rub down after the second coat. Without a good seal a nice gloss/semi-gloss finish is nearly impossible by my methods at least. Second, all those lamination's make for a rough, wavy surface because the glue joints are harder than the wood making for ripples. Even after using a sanding block. With that knowledge I usually stop at the 220 grit stage and apply finish then. I have not tried a subdued oil finish or the like as usually the customer wants a glossier finish to show off the lamination.

And so goes the life and fortunes of a junior wood butcher.
Now lets get back to making SWARF!

I had a Boyds ventilated thumbhole stock on a Ruger M77. It was mostly inleted and not finished. It was very high quality and I had a lot of fun finishing it, I pillar bedded it. Unfortuneatly It was purchased from me by a friend. He said it was his most accurate rifle. 22-250 cal.

I have a Boyd's stock on a custom Enfield(not Mauser, that's another project). It's beautiful, very solid and feels great.

It had to be custom fit to the barrel obviously.

I thought of that, but because of the design I'm afraid it will be too weak by the wrist. Maybe one of these days I will modify it for my Benjamin Marauder air rifle. That will be legal.

That's a MAUSER? Looks like a Brit rifle.

Mr. Wilson, I agree with you. Really has that Enfield signature to my eye also. The silenced .45 acp would make for one heck of a walk around rifle. Really neat idea.
