Well I measured my ways again since I finally got a good set of mics. My front way is worn .0023 on the headstock side and the rear way is something like .0034 I may be off a few ten thousandths. The problem right now is u get roughly midway travel with the carriage and it becomes very hard to move. Towards the tail stock side it won't move at all without a lot of force. The rear bearing plate is shimmed so I have right around .001 play up and down and at some point I'd like to have full travel of the carriage. So what are my options for repair? I'd like full travel because at some point I'd like to make long shafts and possible attempt a barrel or two.

Run it down to the tight spot and loosen the bolts and snug them so it moves free, the amount of wear you have is not much.

I'm curious if maybe I have the bearing plate set too tight. I didn't think I had too much wear I was just wondering what more experienced people had thought.

The hold down under the rear way? I can't picture in my head a hold down on the cross slide

Okay just making sure. Mine was worn more on one side then the other day I may have to try and fix that soon to see if it helps.

Carlo,

Loosen the mounting screw to Increase the clearance between the hold down plates both front and rear. Run the carriage over toward the right end of the bed and adjust both for minimum clearance without sacrificing free movement. So long as you don't take heavy cuts and the work diameter isn't too large, you shouldn't have any problem with the rear of the carriage trying to lift off of the bed. The carriage gib adjustment you will have to either live with or you might try scraping the back of the rear way.
