They could, but they don't like being forced to explain themselves to Congressional committees. They also have to remain within the (admittedly broad) limits of the law for fear of being reined in by the courts.

I'm no where close to a 'machinist' but easily completed a ar10 based on a 80% lower. Pretty simple stuff.

We are getting afield on this.

I profiled the prototype bolt today on the X2 CNC.

Remaining to be done - Fireing pin hole and slots.
The firing pin is on the left. The fun part is the 3 sticky-out things. The ones to the sides cock the firing pin. the center one meets the primary sear. The bottom slot runs the full length of the bolt. The sear and final lever are also mounted in the slot. The side slots are more interesting. The forward part of the slot can be milled from the outside, but the slot runs all the way to the back of the bolt.

A broach would be the ideal way to cut the side slots. I have tried several times in the past to fabricate broaches and failed. I think it has something to do with not having a torch or an oven. I should be able to cut the back part of the side slots with a file. The firing pin does not travel on that portion of the slot, so accuracy can be a bit looser there.

The hole for the firing pin has to be drilled before any slots are cut. The firing pin travels at an angle to the axis of the bore, I planned to tilt the head of the mill to drill the hole. The problem is setting the right angle, after I figure out how to measure it.

The prototype bolt milled fine, but I had intended to fabricate the final version from prehard 4140. I have never worked with it.

The slots, firing pin hole, and retainer are done. Today I made a test barrel to test the alignment of the firing pin. It will also be used to develop and fit the ejector.
