Alright Gentlemen,

I bolted a thin steel plate on the taper attachment and cross feed screw cover on the back of the carriage. (It consist of an aluminum casting). I will sometimes release the magnetism button to drop some swarf that will accumulate as shown in the picture as I move it into position around the chuck area.

I attach my indicator and mag base to have a piece of 1" x 6" x 6" steel sitting on my bench. My benches are wood topped so I had to make do.

When not in use, mine all seem to migrate to the same area on the end of my shelving rack.

While we are on the subject of magnetic bases, I have 3 Chinese bases with on-off levers that I got with my used lathe, and none of them seem to be worth a hoot.
Are there any good (strong) but relatively inexpensive indicator bases that you can recommend. Thanks

PS: I think he is a spokes person foe noga.

I understand that the strong magnets in these indicator bases will erase the digital tape found in your digital calipers.

Like the others, I store mine ready to go, stuck in a safe position close to where I use it.

I thought most digital measurement strips were capacitive or optical. I would think a magnetic stripe would be nearly impossible to read at low speeds. I'll have to look into that. I have seen them trash LCD displays though. My son ruined a laptop of mine with a bunch of magnets from a toy once. Display never did resolve itself. :frown 2:

I keep my mag bases on a shelf way up high where no one, including me, can knock them over. I do leave the indicators on them because I have different bases set up for different types of measurements.

Both of mine are so old they won't stick to the side of my toolbox, and I don't want my tools magnetized. Using parallels on the surface grinder is murder as-is!

I either store mine by my QCTP holders on a shelf above the lathe or near my surface plate for inspection duty.

I generally leave the 1" travel, .001 graduated indicator mounted on the LMS noga knockoff ($35 or so) magbase holder. It gets used a ton. I also have one of the round magnets that mounts to the back of the same type indicator (replaces the lug backplate) that usually lives on the lathe bed. Gets used on the horizontal mill too. I always remove and store the dial test indicator, though. Too delicate to leave lying around.
