been procrastinating for far too long about these.
The wimpy bendy skinny original gibb just doesnt do a good job.
If its tight enough to stop the cross slide from lifting then its too tight to move, if its smooth and easy to move then it lifts when taking various cuts.
So, the questions are
1, what material would be the best to make a new one from?
2, should the cross section of the gib almost fill the space available?
3, how many more adjustment screws should I add as I dont think the original three is sufficient.
4, without a mill how would I cut them to shape? Or shop the job out?
5, anything else I should think of?
Thanks

Take the gib out and look at it carefully. See if it is bent by sighting down it. If it is bent and it is steel, you can bend it straight _very_carefully. It it is cast iron, it should not be bent, and it will break if you try to bend it. It will also likely break if you drop it on the floor. If it is straight, look at the wear patterns on it. Don't take it to a belt sander or lapping plate trying to make it fit. Gibs should be scraped in to fit. There are several good YouTube videos on how to do it, but be warned there is a learning curve involved. First take it out, take some good pics of the wear patterns, and report back. Some of the import gibs are very poorly fitted to the ways.

these horrible little things bend just looking at them.

buy a piece of low carbon ground flat stock to make a new one ,if you try to scrape it in good luck, steel changes with the temperature of your hands.Surface Grind it in and spot it for oil pockets, good enough.

Wow, how thin are they? Maybe a picture?
My little 10x22's cross slide gib is over 1/4" thick and not readily hand bendable.

OK, so I exaggerated a bit, not much, just a bit.

It just seems to me that if more of that space is taken up with a good fitting gib it would be better.

I agree, there seems to be just too much empty space, both in width and height. It looks like you need to embigerate it.

Just pulled the end off my 10x22 griz cross slide and all I can say is that mine is bigger than yours, gib that is. Are there any other 9x20 owners out there that could verify that your gib is characteristic
to that model? Or just plunge in and take Kernbigo's advice and sprout yourself a new and improved (and home grown) gib of your own.
