Shop Rice

Wife is on the look out for Silica gel pacs for me then I use them and heat and reuse some more. I take all she can give me. I even collect them at my work.
I had the mice problem in the garage would not want that again. LIke was mentioned there was many thousands in damaged stuff. The rice is one they like. The socks do not really slow them down that much from what I can tell. I would almost swear they can chew metal.
They do chew metal. I had a pair of noise canceling headphones in my office desk and they chewed through the cable ruining the headphones. Countless other electronic cables as well. My wife had them chew through the ignition wiring on her Audi. I would never encourage them with food.

mice you can get rid of.
say peanut butter!

Yes... peanut butter seems the universal 'bait' for a mechanical trap.
Add one small marsh-mellow to each dab of peanut butter.

I had a rodent issue (larger than mice) a few years ago... got some small wire box traps. Baited them with peanut butter and put one small marsh-mellow in the PB... when they contained a 'intruder'... I just put the trap on the back deck in the weather for a few days... then dumped the no longer living contents into the trash can.
They come to peanut butter every time... I never had a trap out over a night without a catch... until the 'critters' were all gone.

BTW: They do not care between creamy and crunchy... they do prefer fresh though... the stronger the smell... the better...
IMO the marsh-mellow adds to the smell that attracts them.

i highly recommend the bigger plastic tongue.just licking the butter it wont trip it...this guy finally got it when he stepped on the one side to reach across.. his or her previous buddy actually drug the whole trap into the dark..camera shy i guess

One time years ago... actually, I think it was a decade ago....

Had a serious rat problem... so I started out with the snap traps.
One morning I found a trap with TWO small rats (body around 4-5") in it...
Joked about how the guy took his girlfriend out for their last meal...

You could put it in old jam jars with holes pierced in the lid to help avoid spillage and discourage and mice etc.

I've seen and have had friends use "De Humidifiers" from the pound shop, their basicaly a big tub silica crystals that you stick in the back of wardrobes or cupboards that get a bit damp. They seem to fill up with water after a while so I guess their doing something.

A word of caution regarding silica gel; don't place it near open contact relays. An engineer @ Deltrol informed me years ago that the contact arcing can fuse air born silica gel micro particles to them causing conductivity issues.

I didn't read every post. But the old timers put a little block of CAMPHOR inside the drawers of their tool chests. I think it leaves a very thin film of oil on the tools as it slowly evaporates. At least, the tools within always felt that way. I liked it and put some in my wooden tool chest. You used to could buy it at drug stores. Probably can find it on the internet.

Unless you want to go all modern, and use dessicant packs as mentioned. I'd prefer the camphor. No longer needed as my shop is heated and air conditioned. But,years ago machinists had to come up with solutions. Especially if they worked in ship yards near salt water.

I enjoyed the nose clearing smell, too. And the nostalgia that the smell evoked. Crazy, huh?

Mice don't have bladders so they leave a trail of scent (urine) that all the other mice will follow. If you set a trap on
a trail, you are sure to catch them.

I had a rat prob in a house I bought, snap traps got all but one . After a week I put a motion activated wireless ir security camera in the attic to see the little bastard, it was a flying squirrel that didn't like PB.
One night I got home and was getting somthing to eat and the little bastard came flying out of the silverware drawer when I opened it  it flew around the kitchen a couple times and landed by a small hole in the baseboard and escaped , it was an older house out in the woods in AR.
I put a small live trap in attic with apple in it where I could see it with the camera , the next day it was in the trap, I turned it loose bout 5 miles away in the woods , never had another problem with critters.
:frog:.

Just my 2 cents....
