Educate Me On Thread Dials

Steve, that's a good example from the ancient world, but I 've never seen anything made in the last 2 centuries that use a multiple start thread on a barrel tenon, or even on a breech block. The design of that breech block in the Ferguson rifle with 10-12 start thread would be big challenge even in this day. I would imagine the internal threads were actually forged around a mandrel back in the day.

Derf,
After checking into this I have to agree. I'm not sure what I was remembering, but somewhere in my past I've seen a multi-start square threaded cap that I thought was associated with the bolt of a rifle. I can't dredge that up though. I did see some videos that show alternate ways of beginning multi-start threads though, so the dial may not be as important as I thought. Oh, well.
