2016 POTD Thread Archive

I just got an ethernet smooth stepper, hooked it up and wow. I was able to get rid of the electronic gearing and regain my step resolution. The other added bonus is I now have 250ipm rapids, around 150% increase. And super smooth movements at low speed. I have videos I will share later. I'm also awaiting the arrival of a Pokeys57e to handle mpg and in the future the 48 button keypad amongst other control.
250ipm seems blazing fast at the moment, however I could increase the max step freq of the smooth stepper and get even more speed if I wanted. But when your at the middle of the table, with about 14 inches of travel in either direction it runs out of room very quickly at 250

Bill stopped by today to see if I had a 6x6 timber he could borrow. Found a rough sawn 8 foot one up by the sawmill, then proceeded to load it in his Tesla, It fit with the hatch closed.

TESLA ? really ? i thought they just advertised those cars. didn't reallly think anyone had one. thats AWSOME. zero to 90 at the speed of light ? sweet.

Those look good. Will you be truing those up once they are on the chuck? Mike

One of my projects for the weekend is hopefully either an extension cord for the welder or relocating my 240v outlet. As it is I can only use the welder in the least-accessible corner of the shop, moving things around to get the welding cart back far enough to plug it in, and generally making a mess of the whole shop before I make so much as a single tack weld.

Is 10 gauge appropriate for adding 15-20 feet to a 30 amp 240 volt circuit? I'm not sure what gauge is in the wall, but the existing outlet is no more than 20 feet (liberal estimate, one-way; 40 feet round-trip circuit length) from the breaker.

my uneducated opinion is you will be fine. assuming your a hobbiest, your not running this power wide open, 24 hours a day. . . . . try it. i have a 40ft extension cord i use on my miller 185 wire feed welder, from the plug in the wall, thats another 25-30 feet from the breaker. . . . . . no problems to date, been 15 years or so, but i am a casual user. just sayin'

Good point. The power is a simple 1-10 dial and I have never used it past 7. It's almost always around 5 or 5.5. And no, I don't use it a lot. I've put up with the inconvenient location for a while, but now it's driving me nuts as I'm working on a couple of sizable welding projects.
