Acme Tap

I've made acme nuts in the lathe, a little tedious but function was fine.......

I would have tried the 9.95 tap for this one time use but I never saw that on ebay. My solution is working great. The moxon vise I built is a very handy item around the shop. I use it every day!

Good for you.
I had to do LH acme threads for a cross slide nut and decided to cut the threaded rod and make a tap (was 5/8 x 10). Even on acetal they wouldn't work. I then ground a bit and used it to do the rough threads on the lathe. After that, I used the home made taps and they did the job. For the "real thing", I used the same approach, but used a borrowed tap. The material was 350 brass and harder to cut than acetal. Worked fine. I tried using the borrowed tap without doing the internal cuts first, and found that it was much too difficult to turn the tap Making the rough cut on the lathe with a boring bar and a home ground bit proved to be the answer. Had those approaches not worked, I'd have gotten some nuts and used those instead.
The original nuts were either of cast iron or "grey metal" (whatever that is). Hard, so it cracked. Didn't want to have to do the job again, and didn't want to work with cast iron, so I used acetal for practice and brass for the final. I'm sure the acetal would have been fine, at least for a while.
