Micrometers For The Beginner?

carbide tips take a long time to wear out. reading in tenths (.0001) and have a ratchet thimble instead of a friction thimble (personnel choice) and a lever thimble lock instead of a lock ring. better locking action. when they calibrated the mics at work the tech meteorologist used the ratchets at 3 clicks , so when the bearings were measured for motor rebuilding then we had to duplicate the three clicks on each mic we used. work only bought starrett but mitutoya, shere tomico fowler and some Chinese made ones feels good in the hand and measures well. what kind of work are you doing that you need to buy the best. get a good set og gauge blocks and you can check your mics to tenths.
but if you are like me a toolaholic then buy the best someday but for now get what you can afford. at pawn shops though texas I bought at set of mituoya 0 to 10 inch atg 5 different pawn shops in 5 different towns I don't know if you have pawn shops nearby if you do go shopping bill

Oh I forgot bout the finish try to get a satin chrome finish it doesn't rust. makes it easier to read. older mics do not have a chrome finish and will rust look out for that also. some of this appears in the above so in sorry for copying some I was just saying what I look for in one or two posts bill

Get something with a ratchet or slip device as stated earlier the hardest thing for me with occasional use is trying to consistently tighten the same amount everytime :)
