Lathe Levelling And Other Lathe Issues

Lets remember that there are TWO 2 collar tests. One of them requires holding in the chuck only. The other requires holding between centres.
Each of the 2 collar tests has a separate objective.

Just and FYI. I chucked up my precision ground bar in my 4JC. Next to the chuck I was able to achieve basically zero run-out. At the end I had .011"
Though that was odd so I tried a smaller linear motion rod I had same thing except .005" run-out as the bar is shorter I suspect.

ddickey,

You have to take a brass mallet and gently bump the test bar out on the end to get it running true. Leave your jaws tightly snugged, not tight, for this operation. Once trued up, walk around and tighten the jaws and adjust as needed. You shouldn't neeed to tighten the jaws too much on the test bar. It's not like your going to do any cutting on the bar. Ken
