Blocked And Insulted By Ebay!

Any part number on the transistor itself? Might be a number than we can cross over or find a sub for. Really very few totally unique transistors. Also, it's possible, that that isn't a transistor. There are several solid state devices that have the same appearance but slightly different functions and internal construction.

I'm calling it a transistor for lack of a better word . From what i've read, it varies the resistance from 0-20,000 ohms . It says Metco 140 00270 on the back . The sawzall is still very solid so I hate to throw it away . I checked the numbers many times and nothing comes up . A guy on ebay has one but I dont want to pay $30 for a 5 dollar part to fix a 1990's sawzall . The part is obsolete and with no cross , I cant figure out what it is . If i knew what it was, I could get a modern equivalent and be in business .

OK, varies based on what? I mean, what drives it? Transistors operate more or less like variable on-time(or off-time) switches. So there has to be some signal to tell it when to switch. More suitable for DC work, I believe. I'm sure someone that knows more than I do will come in and help. I know just enough to stay out of trouble some of the time. For some reason a MOSFET come to mind. Not sure why.

Correct . The only thing I can see is that it connects to the trigger ....which as far as I can see is not variable , it's just an on or off trigger switch ....and there is also a Hi/Lo switch on the side of the handle .
This is one of those things where it's bad to have OCD ...lol
I could just solder a jumper across it, have it be just "ON or OFF" and call it a day . I have a newer Milwaukee from around 2005 , this is just a spare . but noooo ...the "sickness" won't allow it .
I must fix this thing ....

my respone is this, i don't usually sell on ebay- here is why
a seller owes a buyer absolutely nothing but the product pictured.
the buyer expects gold plated service for little money, a strange dichotomy.
if every prospective buyer askes 2 questions about the item,
it prevents the seller from selling other items because his time is spent on answering questions regardless of wether he gets a sale or not.
ask yourself this question, how much time would you give to other people if the time was not compensated?
much less for an item that you may realize a $15 profit and then have to give part of that $15 to paypal and some to ebay to handle the transaction
now the seller made $8, and you'd like him to be happy about it and answer every question with a smile.
seems unfair from the sellers perspective.
in most cases the buyer will cry if he is hung with a new rope
treat the sellers like you would like to be treated.
if you are realistic, you'll rarely be disappointed.

Interesting response, not to pick on you Doc, but just a general observation on other responses. First customers can be a PIA but they are customers. If you look at thread on this site and other boards everyone praises the merchant that helps a customer regardless if they are buying something or not. If a merchant takes time telling you how and why something works and then says you only need this $2.00 part instead of buying a new one for $75.00, they are praised to no end and considered a keeper. Good old fashion business man. They have much more overhead than a eBay seller has. Here an eBay customer is asking questions, I would expect the seller to answer them in a courteous manner. Can it be frustrating yes. I see some of the stupidest question on Amazon. I don't sell on eBay. Don't want to deal with it. I do purchase a lot there. I've had my run ins with sellers. Mostly because their "description" is deceptive or what is included in the order is only a small parts of what is shown.

First time for everything I guess. So I was interested in a machine part on Ebay and after asking (apparently) one question too many, the seller writes me a ranting note about how he's losing money on the deal, and how long it's taking to sell this stuff, etc. He says I "crossed the line" and it's not worth his time. I think the guy needs a major attitude adjustment- what do you think? Funny thing is, I was just about ready to buy. And still would, if he "allowed" me to. Weird, and disappointing since no one else seems to have just that style of part. I see he has one other complaint along the same lines. It was a 5" steel ball crank handle. Anybody have one?View attachment 140607

Happened to me a little differently. The guy girligirl I think, would not answer any questions. On any item. Finally I asked him why he was such a jerk. He responded that, that's why I don't answer your questions. Cart before the horse... He blocked me. Reviews of his transactions shows him to be a real low life.

Another guy hadn't shipped yet, and I was already supposed to have it in hand, I pay immediately, he decided it wasn't that important that he needed to deliver and told me that I had some nerve wanting my order (remember I paid immediately) and what a D.. bag I was ... Lets see... it's 2.5 weeks now and you haven't shipped, I was supposed to have it 3 days ago according to the original sale ...

There are a lot of unscrupulous people out there. Then there are the people that just do the right thing. Your guy was just one of the jerks out there.

More than likely the TRIAC is burned out. Punch in the part number into Google of anything than looks like a transistor. You can probably get a replacement from Digikey or eBay :) for a buck or less. Had to fix the vari-speed on my "Dremal" tool. Bought a packet of them for <$5.00

What model number is this Sawzall? I have one or two of those here, I believe. Maybe I can get some readings of a "good" one and maybe we can determine what this critter really is. I definitely agree that it's most likely something there is a generic replacement for. We just need a bit of information yet. And yes, it definitely could be a triac. Are you getting some readings across any of the pins? And the 0-20kΩ figure....where are you getting that?

We actually have a member who is in the tool repair business. He's quite busy and doesn't get on here often. Perhaps I can contact him offline and get a little help. I'll let you know once I get the model number.

If the saw is a 6507, the triac you need is GE SC143D or equivalent.
