New To Me Mckenzie Lathe

That's got me thinking I'm going to have to measure for thrust clearance when it goes back together now won't I? What's a typical spec for oil clearance on something like this?

I did some detective work on John Deere green: Valspar and Rustoleum both offer one, they are both the post-1989 lighter shade. Rustoleum has it listed under their "farm and implement" specialty paint. Valspar also sells a hardener which can be used with any alkyd oil-base paint including theirs.
I also want to try mixing the Rustoleum garden variety "Hunter green" with some of their "Sunburst yellow" and see how close to JD green I can get.

ps I saw several nice machine colors in the "Farm and Implement" series: Kubota orange, and some good reds too.

I'm guessing a few tenths is what you want, but it's still a guess. I'll defer to someone who actually has a lathe that big (I don't)

I know In an engine the crank shaft gets about 1-2thou of oil clearance for the clam shell friction bearings so I thought maybe the same for the spindle but I'd like to be sure I know I'm not going to be able to find the original specs so any general rule of thumb / generic spec would work for me!

Did a little research and found that a 12" South bend lathe with clam shell bearings of similar vintage would call for between .0007 and .0014 I'm just gonna go with this spec it seems about right to me

I plan to use plastigauge just wasn't sure on what kind of clearance I was looking for. Right now I'm getting the bed and legs ready for paint! IMG_20170115_130120.jpg

Hey guys quick question on the spindle bearings, I'm at the point where I have e the opportunity to take them out and clean behind them my question is; is it worth it for me to do that while it's apart or would I just be causing a headache for myself when I go to reinstall them? They are just regular clam shell friction bearings.

Calling all journal bearing experts!! Here's the other half of the bearing, its pitted pretty bad I think. Should I take it out and clean in behind it or should I just do my best cleaning around it. My issue is im not really sure how they come out ive tried prying on them a little but they won't budge is it possible that they are pressed in? IMG_20170122_105213.jpg
