Mystery metal?

4140 is very easy to spot with a spark test, if you have a known sample. The trickiest part is telling it apart from 1045. Look for spears at the ends of the sparks. It is very distinguishable from mild steel. You won't need a test coupon for this. Just look for carbon sparks. These days, most round above 2" in the scrapyard is either 1045 or 4140.

Is there any writing on the sides? Paint on one end?

I can't help you identify the alloy, but I know a "steal" when I see one! :D
Congrats on a great pick up - can't wait to see what you do with it.

It has silver on the ends It was at freight salvage ( insurance salvage) all the stuff is re labeled and no info is given.. kind of a pain but I was able to buy around 1200.00 or more in end mills for 150 winning bid..so kind of love going.
