VN 1966 Van Norman Attachments Arbors & Accessories

Thanks for posting that! That's more recent than anything that I have. It does list 1-1/4" diameter horizontal milling arbors for the "C" spindle (used on No.6, No. 12 and No. 16 machines). I had not seen that before.

Did you scan that? If so, could you please post a higher resolution (300+ DPI) version of it as a .PDF file?

Cal,
I hope the attached helps.
I had it in my digital files.

So is it correct to assume that somewhere in the world, their might actually be a 'C' type arbor that would fit a 1 1/4" cutter? As a VN novice, I guess I assumed that 1" arbors were the largest diameter available. If so, maybe time to think about making a couple of 1 1/4" arbors and giving up trying to find 3/4" and 1" cutters.

The attachment looks like one that I have and sent to several people (Cal I think this is in the package that I mailed to you several years ago). I am sure that Vandyck & Churchill provided hundreds of these brochures.
I typically don't post them because I don't want some yahoo copying them and then selling them on eBay when the intent is to provide them free. Is there a way to put a watermark across the page to prevent someone from selling them? Maybe I'll contact Keith Rucker at Vintage Machinery and discuss it with him.

Thanks Daryl & Mike. I turns out that I did, in fact, already have the PDF that Daryl just uploaded. I don't know why it looked new to me, I guess that I just didn't pay that much attention to the arbors in that file.

One thing to note is that, strictly speaking, the 1-1/4 arbors are for No. 16 machines, not No. 12 machines. They have the 23/32" diameter pilot on the end that works with the ball bearing overarm support used on the No. 16. The No. 12 arbors, which work with the dead center held in the No. 12 overarm support, only go up to 1". The No. 16 piloted-arbors that I've seen do have a center in the end, but it's not as large as that of a No. 12 arbor. You could use a No. 16 arbor with a number 12 dead-center, but you would have several inches of extra, unsupported arbor to add flex to your setup. Add to that the fact that the pilot is only 0.719" in diameter and your 1-1/4" arbor starts to look pretty poor (IMHO), particularly if it's very long!

Cal,
That's the best description of the differences of arbor supports I've seen.
Since I started watching I've found several pics of the aluminum live center support associated with the VN16 on VN12s.
I didn't know there was a difference in the size of the center.
Thank you.

Thanks Cal. Talk about subetlies in the VN literature. After reading your description, went back to the 1966 parts list. Page 3 shows the "c" arbors, and the 1 1/4" arbors have a 16 prefix in the part number. All the prefix 16 arbors have the pilot diameter listed as 25/32". On page 4, more "C" arbors but the 12 prefix listings only go to 1". No other differentiation. Missed that completely the first time around. Makes sense, but VN sure made things complicated.

Hi Daryl,

I have not seen a live center arbor support on a No. 12. It's possible that a No. 16 arbor support found it's way onto a No. 12, but even the latest model No. 12, which use the No. 16 cutter-head, gearbox shafts, etc., didn't have the live center (as far as I know). I don't know if Van Norman made a stub-center (for lack of the correct term) that plugged into the No. 16 overarm support and allowed No. 12 arbors to be used on a No. 16; one would certainly be easy enough to make.
