Indicating in an adjustable 6-Jaw (Fuerda)?

I ordered a Fuerda adjustable 6-jaw chuck, since it's what I could afford and I've seen some decent things said about them. I assumed (wrongly I guess), that the adjustment screw would be equally opposed and that adjusting in would be a process similar to adjusting a four-jaw. However, the screws are biased towards each other on opposing sides. There are two screws, about 30 degrees apart on one side and 2 screws, about 30 degrees apart, on the the other.

For the life of me, I can't imagine how the adjustment process is supposed to go. Is this similar to other adjustable chucks or is this unique to Fuerda? Any Fuerda people out there that have some tips? I've played around with it for about an hour now and really all I'm doing is %^!$!# it up.

If I understand your explanation, two adjusting screws are at 2 & 4 o clock and the other two at 8 & 10 o clock?

I just bought a Gator/Fuerda 6J chuck a couple of week ago and the screws are opposed to each other. Sounds like they let one slip through QC to me.

I would see if I could exchange it, or at least call them and ask how the fine adjustment screws are supposed to be before you tell them about yours.

OK, here's how I would approach centering. Treat it as a four jaw chuck as far as centering.

with my earlier explanation on location of the adjustment screws, using a marker, make lines at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00. ( if you have different colors, one color at 3&9 and another at 6&12--no colors? make wide and thin lines )

If it needs to move towards the 12:00 position, you would loosen the 10:00 and 2:00 screws and tighten ( snug) the 4:00 & 8:00 screws.

If it needs to move towards the 3:00 position, loosen the 2&4 and tighten the 8 &10 screws.

Let me know if I should explain it a different way.

Jeff

Thanks, I will do that. Here's a couple of pics, the first showing two of the adjustment screws and then the chuck rotated 90 degrees. I'm not crazy, right?

Ok, yeah, I get that. I'm fine with that process if that's how it's supposed to be. I think I will check to make sure my check was a QC slipup before I spend too much time with it. Thanks for the clear explanation though!

Here are pics of mine. The part number for mine is 1-903-0600 (6") then I would say they screwed up.

Regardless if it's an error or not you can still adjust it fine. Both my 5" & 6.25" Bison 6-jaw Set-Tru chucks have 4 scews that were not exactly opposing each other in line. I'm able to adjust TIR to .0002" without an issue & quickly. Doesn't seem likley that it was an error but who knows. Maybe the steel & semi-steel chucks are different for the Fuerdas? Bison does not make these in semi-steel.

Yes, you are correct. I took Jeff's advice (which I am embarrassed to admit I didn't think of in the heat of the moment) and I was able to true it up pretty quickly. It's a bit of a pain fiddling with two screws at once, but it's bearable. I'll find out if it's supposed to be like this or not- if it's not, I'd like to have a correct one, if for no other reason that who knows what else was not QC'd correctly on it.

My 6.25" Bison 6-jaw Set-Tru only has 3 screw screws & again I'm able to adjust TIR to .0002" without an issue & quickly. Doesn't seem likley that it was an error but who knows.
