Re: rung fu clone RF-45 ZX45 cnc conversion

i wanted to add a note about the zx45 i havent posted for a while because i have been making parts for my lathe conversion.
normally when i make something there is always something i wish i would have done different but this build to date has been perfect there has not been one problem or change needed and i am using it every day. I like the magnetic splash shields because cleanup is easy and setup up is easier not reaching into a big box. if there are any problems or modifications i will post them for others but so far i could not be happier.
now i need to get my lathe done and make something besides tools and equipment

Re: rung fu clone RF-45 ZX45 cnc conversion

I have ordered a direct replacement 3 phase motor and vfd today to increase my spindle speed. it was in my original plans but i held off to see how the mill did without it. the mill did fine but i want it anyway
total cost less a shipping quote i'm waiting for is motor 149.00 and vfd 118.00.
i was concidering a watercooled 3 phase spindle with inverter but it left me with too large of a gap in speeds the mills max now is 1970rpm and the 3phase spindles minimum was 8000rpm.
the mill is broken in now and there is no spindle temp to speak of at high speed so i'm hoping the increase in rpm will not hurt the bearings...
i'd like to get up to at least 4000 rpm. i can do engraving on my sherline cnc mill if needed.

I have seen some people mount a high speed spindle to the side of the head. You would get the best of both worlds that way with a slight decrease in work envelope due to it being on the side. I thought it was a great idea in using the table in a dual function without the expense of 2 machines.

Great work on your machine!! Cannot wait to get started on mine.

You've got a pretty good bang for the buck with both of those items, and looking at the source of the motor you're guaranteed it will be a drop in replacement.
Neat solution for what you're trying to do.

I added a cup wheel grinder to the mill today, it should come in handy.

Add a magnetic chuck to the table and you've got a surface grinder.

Steve, what speed is the motor for cup grinder, and did you have to do any bushing between cup and motor shaft?

    regards

the grinder is 3800 rpm 1/5hp and i had to make an adapter to fit the motor shaft 10mm to 20mm cup wheel. it spins really smooth and quiet.
i use this motor as a tool post grinder on my lathe and it works well.

    thanks chris
as far as the build i havent thought of anything more to add until the vfd and motor get here. along with the grinder i also have a 28,000 rpm engraver that will fit in the same bracket as the cup wheel grinder.
I may start a thread where everyone can post pics/vids of what their cnc did today since i do something with one of mine almost everyday.

    added note:
the spline on my mill spindle is 6 point and a 1" 12 point wrench fits it perfectly, leaving no marks for tightening and loosening the drawbar. i was going to make a wrench until i tried a regular one.

Re: rung fu clone RF-45 ZX45 cnc conversion

I have thought about that but i really dont need it, the tormach tooling still requires loosening the collet if not a power draw bar and changing the tool by hand. since the column is my z axis, the fast way i do it is with the spindle fine feed i start with the spindle locked down about an inch and a half. and zero the first tool on material that wont be removed, then when i change tools i turn the fine spindle adjustment to rezero each tool at that same location. it costs nothing and dont take long to change er collets. i dont do any production type of work so speed is not a real factor but this method is fast.
the next thing i will be adding is vfd and 3 phase motor for higher spindle speeds. the motor is on backorder until january so thats on hold
everything else is working perfect still, so far all i have had to do i tighten a coupling on the z because i forgot to tighten a set screw. that was an easy fix.

i concidered that but i was not paying attention and have tooling with metric and standard threads. i was paying attention to price and did not notice the thread types. on a good note the zx45 has both threads on the same draw bar, just flip it over and use the other nut. someone in china was thinking when they built it.

    Quick note on the Tormach

    Steve,
Using the TTS r8 collet, a bolt, and some Belville (probably not the exact name), washers shaped with a bow like this () creates tension to hold the tooling in the R8 collet. No need for a wrench, only downward pressure on the bolt collapsing the bow in the washers slightly to change the tooling collets.
Here is the video that made it crystal clear for me.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyaZG...ayer_embedded#!

I know I will be investing in the TTS system when I get up and running.

Eventually, either air powered or manually, some kind of power drawbar setup is what I am going to need. I will go to the Tormach system.

    hi rob
everything I can see does look the same. is the crank for the column on the left side and a square housing?
I will find all the drawings i have and post them here for you in a zip file but i would compare the measurements before making the parts.
also the bearing mount plates were modified for clearance after test fitting.

here are all my drawings i could find in emachineshop(ems) and dxf format.
there are drawings in the folder that were for the cnc lathe conversion and others you will just have to go through them to see what you can use.
the ones for the build were shown in the build thread so they should be easy to pick out.

I was torn between the two, and as Jumps said, Wholesale Tool has the best price, but whether you're out of state and have it delivered, or if you're in Florida like me and could collect it, the price comes out pretty much the same whether you pay for shipping or pay for the tax; either way it's close to $2K.
The G0704 from Grizzly is just under $1.2K for me with shipping, and for the things I'm likely to be doing I think it will have enough power.
However, the ZX45 is seriously heavy duty and represents an excellent value if you're going to need its capability. If it was $1.5K on my doorstep I could swing it, but a line has to drawn somewhere (for me at any rate).

I can understand why, and if you want to retain a deep voice and the ability to have more kids you'd better keep them that way.
I'm sure she has no idea how much of the family fortune resides in your shop in the form of machinery!

Was it just the face of the teeth on the bottom of the bit that were damaged or were the sides hit too?

Did you write that freehand or is there a wizard in Mach3 that helps in combining the fourth axis with the x,y, and z?

Very interesting to watch whichever it was, and that digital angle gauge is a handy toy!
