I have a 10ee without motor. It has the ac vfd but the motor was needed elsewhere. I bought it for a parts machine but I found a 10 hp dc motor and got to thinking about putting it in the machine. I know that's what I get for thinking.

Any idea about control cost? I have 480 in the shop. Will controller change ac to dc plus forward-reverse and rpm-torque.

Well I was looking around the net and came across guy trying to do the same thing. After reading all the problems I think I will go back with an ac motor for the vfd.

Since you already have the VFD, that is a big cost factor and there have been some issues with DC controllers for this size motor, it would cost 2-3X more than then a 3 phase motor. Lots of VFD conversions posted for the these lathes, this was a nice one: http://bedair.org/Monarch10EE/monarch10ee.html
Just think a VFD is simpler and usually you have more control over the motor depending on the VFD. A new 10Hp 3 phase inverter rated motor will run about $400-500, maybe less, a 10Hp DC controller would be quite a bit more. I also have seen a number of conversions with 5 and 7.5Hp motors.

This would be a great motor for $125, but states no shipping, you might be able to arrange freight: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLUE-BLlACK...er-Motor-213THTS8038BP-Marathon-/121961550287

I appreciate your reply. That's what going back for replacement.
