Logan 400 Lathe, Will not stay in Backgear

Done. Iit was a 5/18"x18 thread Put in a short hex head bolt; really easy to adjust backgear shaft tension now.

I dunno, I've had a Logan 200, 825, 9B, 912 and 1957, different decades of manufacture from 1940's to 1960's. Something doesn't seem right here. I don't see how you can shift into backgear without detaching the spindle from the belt drive. Or how it shifts itself out of backgear when the plunger is engaged properly. Maybe pictures would help show what the problem was. Glad that your fix worked. Just not meshing with my own experience, sounds like a shop made improvement to me.
