I bought a Gates V-Belt for my 12x36t now it is desentagrateing and throwing black gunk all inside the gear/pulley cover. Any suggestions on a replacement? This one is not that old and can't find a better replacment. There is no oil or grease on it.
Thanks.

Which Gates belt, I have used their notched Tri-Power on multiple machines and never had an issue with them. Alternate would be Goodyear notched belt, Continental Wedge V-notched Belt, TIMKEN Gold Ribbon Cogged V-belt, etc.

There was a thread on here that recommended the Gates notched belt. Can't remember the number and size but. We are having a 50-60 mph blizzard here right now, and it is 50yd to the shop. Will post the info asap.

I've seen some crappy belts do that before, but never had a problem with Gates. Are you able to run the belt in question at slow speed? If so, you might see if it's climbing the pulley, scraping along an edge or something like that.

I’m using the Gates Tri-Power on my 1236T and have hardly any shedding. Check the pulleys to make sure they are aligned, if they are off too much, you can damage the belt, especially at such a short distance between shafts. Another possibility is damage to the pulleys that is damaging the belts.

The usual suspect for that is that the belt is slipping.

Too much load.
Not enough tension.
Misaligned pulleys.
Worn pulleys.

The first two are self explanatory, the belt just slips. Misaligned pulleys cause one side of the belt to hit the side before it "rolls into position", so it grinds up on that initial "moving contact". Worn pulleys (sides of the V are not straight lines) will not fit a new belt, which has straight "V" sides. Lack of contact area and too much force on too little of the belt.

We supply all of the GT Lathe Series standard with the US Made Bestorq Belts now. We have done this for about a year now, and have had very good luck with those belts.

Thanks for the belts. I also ordered a pair from my USA Gates supplier here in Colorado. Gates has an out let hrre in Colorado.
Thanks again Mike I checked the pulleys an they are aligned as best as I can tell. I don't see any sign of slippage or heat. Maybe they just got old or the high altitude ozone got to them.
