I had to excavate my measuring equipment shelves to get this Diatest kit out for measurement of a bore with multiple short steps in size, thought I ought to post a photo for all the other Tool Junkies out there.
For large Diatest kits I use a (EDIT) - 1" - 0.00005" (it's .001mm not .001"!) digital gauge zeroed in the reference ring, then you just subtract the reading on the gauge from the reference size for a reading. On the gauges under 1" I set the digital to minus the actual reference ring size and can then read the bore size directly, very handy when you're fiddling with something under 0.040" and 0.5" deep ;-)
