Spindle Insert For 5c Collets...look Right?

rockwell 11" lathe, got in a collet drawbar assembly. I've pretty much got it all now, excepting a taper attachment.

Put the thread protector, insert and hand-wheel on to the machine. Should the insert protrude this much?

It's about 0.310 with just light force applied to push it in.

If the taper feels right in the spindle . That should be fine. You don't want the flange to bottom out.
 
That looks about right. You don't want the flange of the closer adapter touching or close to touching the end of the spindle. You don't want to have to machine a custom adapter if you have to run a reamer in the spindle taper to clean up any damage.
 
Put a collet in, insert piece and tighten down, loosely. Measure if it gets drawn down more and if part is tight. You can always dykem the insert up and reinstall and see where the contact is.
 
Also by 40 to 70%, the most expensive style.
