Spent the biggest part of the afternoon setting up the Saddle for my Clausing 5913. Material needs to be removed on the ways so they can build back up with Moglice. After messing around with the indicator, I finally realized that the backing screws were loose. No stone can be left unturned when setting up something as critical as the Saddle. I almost settled for .003 from left to right on the X axis parallelism. But that little voice that lives in my head said "don't give up look farther" that's when I realized the screws were loose so out comes the mini-Philips head screwdriver and tightened them up. And my final check was to use another indicator to verify all was well. I am now within .0005 on the X and within .0015 on the horizontal. Three of the four corners are dead Zero and the fourth one is .0015 low. My feet are too sore to stand there any longer and chase that .0015. So maybe tomorrow I will start machining it. Kind of depends on my mood. Total removal of material is going to be less than .060 probably more like .050 so light passes of .010 will be my plan. Old age has taught me to take time to chew well before swallowing. Comments welcome.

Do they recommend machining before using Moglice? I always thought you just cleaned and roughed the surfaces and used the proper thickness shims and putty for the dams?

In talking to the tech rep it is best to have a minimum of .0625 build up. The minimum shim is also .0625. So, your answer is yes, and no. Depends on how much wear you have. Saddle ways do not wear evenly left to right and front to back . Understanding that without machining you would need different thickness shims on all 4 corners of the saddle. So when you think the drink all the way through un-even wear is the problem we are trying to correct. Just adding material will not allow the gibs to function correctly.
