The end of the shift lever goes through the HOLLOW detent. Next see the spring inserted into the detent.
Insert the spring followed by the detent. Align the hole in the side of the detent so you can insert the handle.
Put the spring in the detent. (I know a tad redundant.) A little OcD here. I can't help it.

This spring pushes the detent in locking it in place when you release the lever.
