The gear should come off without too much trouble. Although you may need to pry a little bit.
This pin connects the gear to the hub. It goes in a hole that's drilled in it..

There is a wavy spring washer between the speed change handle and the speed change housing. Don't lose it!
Remove the speed change handle. It's secured with this set screw.
