Been looking/researching these and their possibilities. Prices are getting affordable too. Anybody have any firsthand knowledge of these or some insight on them. Also have seen where they are quite affordable/easy to build yourself, I have several small stepper motors that would be perfect for one of these. Anybody interested in building or helping me build one in the near future? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aghzpO_UZE

I've used a couple of different commercial 3D printers and the basic MakerBot machine. The commercial machines are great, but pricey. MakerBot is nice, but there are now lower cost options. Give these guys a look: http://printrbot.com/ . That's what I'm looking at myself.

I know this is an old thread but I figured I add this on in case any one is interested. RepRap is an open source 3D printer. The software to run it is open source. The plastic parts are self-replicated. Anyone that has made one can print you a set. They have a pretty detailed parts list for the other hardware. You can purchase the stepper motors, control boards, and extruder. Most of the other parts are readily available at a good hardware store. I keep thinking I should try to put one together but reading about it is as far as I have made it. http://reprap.org
