What shim material for rf30/31

Things are moving along nicely with the rebuild/refurbish of my mill drill. I am to the point that I need to check tram on the column. The question is what size and type of shim material do I need to get to go under the column? I know it will depend on how much needs to be shimmed, but what should I go buy to be ready?

If I was to shim such a thing, I'd use brass, but if it is off tram, I'd rather hand scrape the column bottom instead.

LOL, I'm barely competent to power the thing on, scrapping is outside of my abilities at the moment.

I have used cheap long feeler gauges for shims.

I used this to shim my square column mill drill. Just plain ol carbon steel. Mine was barely off so good enough for me. They also sell brass & stainless but an assortment pack of those ain't cheap.

I got mine from enco but I'm sure plenty of others carry it. Otherwise, like kd4gij mentioned, feeler gauge stock is inexpensive.

I have the same steel shim set package and use it fairly often. It is pretty reasonably priced for the size of the sheets and the number of sizes included. The sheets can be cut with a scissors, at least the thinner ones. The brass and stainless require a deeper wallet...

I'm sure brass would be ideal but these are light duty hobby mills. Would the material really matter much here?

I purchased this one cause it wasn't expensive & so I could use it for general purpose as well as shimming the mill. I last shimmed the mill years ago, hasn't changed since. Nice size sheets, for me personally may probably last me forever.

I've always used brass , but have that same steel sample pack too. I got mine from kbc tos
