i got the idea to make my own dial indicator holder for my AXA toolposts
i have an modest abundance of 2" square solid 6061 aluminum in different lengths up to 5' long
it has holes and tapped holes from when it was in service as meat processing equipment,
so i cut it into differing lengths trying to find pieces without holes.
i use my Delta 10" saw with a 60 t carbide blade and wax as a lubricant.

often times the dimensions of the aluminum i'm trying to reduce is beyond the safe holding capabilities of my hands.

rather than losing a digit or 2, i have pondered different ways of holding the materials in the trusted saw.
, it hits me
drill and tap the deck of my saw to accept small toe clamps.
by chance i had some 1/4"-20 x 2-1/2" bolts that worked perfectly to anchor the toe clamps

then i had to further reduce the billet by 1/2" lengthwise.
so i rotated the billet 90° and clamped the piece once again.

after that hurdle i cut the dovetail by reducing the center section of the dovetail with a 5/8" 2 flute endmill at roughly .040" DOC per pass

i finished the dovetail with a carbide inserted dovetail cutter made by Randy Richards.

i constructed a standoff from 1/2" Hex 12L14, threaded at both ends male 1/4"-20 tpi to 1/2", drilled and tapped the indicator holder to 1/4"-20 TPI.
i turned and knurled a brass nut and brass washer to permit use on either axis by removing and rotating the indicator and replacing the nut

i'm considering adding an adjustment screw,
but i kinda like the flexibility of just holding it where i want it then clamping it there

Thanks for reading !

Looks good. I love the toe clamps. to hold the stock
Hi Dave,
thank you very much.
i purchased the toe clamps for use on my 7" shaper because of their small size.
i was proud to use them on anything else!!!
flashes of inspiration come at different times, sometimes they actually work :grin big:
i appreciate the comment

Nice.
I see a fixture plate in your future for that saw.
Something I'd like to have myself but too many projects ahead of it.
Been watching a few of the NYC CNC youtubes and he has quite a saw fixture plate....Every time I see it, I think I need that!!!
And the indicator holder.....great use of scrap looks like it will be very handy.
Wish I had 5' lengths of 2x2 scrap.....heaven!

Thanks rgray,
I’ll have to check out the fixture plate videos
I have not watched a lot of his stuff. Not that I don’t like his stuff, more like I’m still trying to understand old tech before moving onto new tech
The 5’ lengths are pretty weak in a couple spots, they are tennoned and less than 3/4” in cross section, then has a 8mm hole drilled transverse - leaving maybe 15mm of meat in those areas
I can get a nice piece about 32” long with just a few tapped holes on some pieces

Yes. I have an interest in Fusion 360 (still don't even have a computer good enough to run it) he goes through it so fast it makes my head swim. Makes it look easy.
His factory tours are interesting to me. Seeing all that fancy stuff shows me that I'm clearly not in their century.
I just see bits of him chop sawing with a fancy base. Never looked for his actual vid on it , but I see he has one.

Nicely done Doc. May have to fit up one of my old chop saws for that purpose. Mike

Thank you very much Mike,
it didn't take long to modify and it will allow more and different work to be held!
i hope it works out for you as it did for me.
