Had to get my eye prescription udpated and I let them talk me into getting my eyes dilated so they can see and take pictures of the retinas... Holey Moley... I'll never do this again. Eyesight is 90% blurry and super light sensitive since this 11:00 this morning. I have no idea how I drove home. I had no depth perception or visual acuity at all. It's still really bad even though the sun is down and the lights are low in the house. Got a pounding headache and colors are still all messed up. This better be over with by tomororw or I'm going to raze hell.

I asked some friensd/ family and they said it only last 3-4 hours. Anybody elase had it bad like this?

In my experience it's 6-8 hours- i'm surprised they let u drive home

Some individuals will stay dilated longer than normal and can last 6-24 hours. By the next day, should be back to normal. There are rare instances (1% incidence) of a condition called acute open angle glaucoma which can be triggered by dilation - if you are having eye pain, eye redness, nausea/vomiting, you should probably contact the eye doctor.

Like I said... Never again...

markba633csi... They said I would be a little light sensitive so they gave me a pair of dark sunglasses that covered my regular glasses. Fortunately, the place was only 6-7 miles down the road. Didn't take long to realize I was not in good shape.

Glaiben, If I have that 1% condition, there's going to be a 1% chance an eye doctor is going to be on his hands & knees tomorrow frantically looking to find the pieces of his teeth. I am not a happy camper about this. Was pretty much lead to believe this is a no-brainer that would "make me a little light senstiive for a couple hours". This is more like a bad trip. Took the day off thinking I'd mess around in the shop afterward. Been flat-out in bed getting up every couple hours to see if this situation is getting better or not. I have my monitor turned a low as it can go and still feel like I got ice-picks in my eyes. Wife says theyre not red though. No nausea -can't bear to eat anything.

OUt for the nite.

I feel for you, last couple of times I was in for that "fun" procedure the dilatation has seemed to last longer. Asked the Doc about it and he said age can make it last longer. I also asked if I could get the drops to reverse it he said they are no longer made, bummer. I find that it seems to help, at least for me to just sleep it off. Bet looking at the computer screen is great fun also.

Ray same thing happened to me the second time I had my eyes dilated. I can’t go without a driver now. I just think some people react differently. I have to plan a full day to recover as well.

My twist to this story is that the first time ever was a doozy. Apparently this stuff “stings” your eyes so they first drop a numbing agent. I’m allergic to it and passed out! Same thing at the dentist! So no more for me.

The vision seems better this morning -at least just by looking around inside the house at nearby objects. Still have a slight residual headache that seems to be responding to the morning dose of coffee.

Having a hard time believing I paid $59 extra for that test and completely ruined a precious vacation day.

The eye doctor won't be needing the dentist today but, I'm going to call and explain the pitfalls of trivializing possible side-effects from this procedure. Upon doing some Net research, apparently people over 50 have a greater chance of these side-effects. 58 qualifies as being over 50 last time I checked. "Doctor" of optometry... Yeah, right!

The first time I had it done (years ago) it really bothered me, had it done again a few years ago and was over it in an hour. Had an eye exam last summer, now they use a laser to map the eye. No drops. They can still compare the results to the old photos.

I never have my eyes dilated anymore--mine always last at least 24 hrs. It sucks big time.
