Hello I am new to the site wish I would have found it long ago. I have a question I use a CCMT 32.51 or 32.52 type tool holder and I would like to know what different type of inserts I can use with it ? I have looked at different lettered inserts like a CCMG and noticed all the dimensions are the same. I would really like to know what inserts I should get for roughing and also finish turning on aluminum ? If anyone can steer me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated thanks James

Generally speaking, milling aluminum requires a C2 carbide grade for roughing and a C3 for finishing. These are general purpose milling grades with a medium grain that have excellent wear resistance for roughing and finishing applications where sharp edges are required. From 700 to 2,000 sfm can be achieved at a feed-per-tooth of .004 to .014. Also, TiC/TiCN cermet grades are ideal for wrought aluminum materials where good edge strength and lubricity are required. From 1,500 to 2,500 sfm can be achieved with these types of ceramic inserts. For endmills and face mills, feed-per-tooth usually ranges from .006 to .014 inches per tooth. Insert designs should have a good positive rake angle to insure that chips leave the cutting edge as quickly as possible (see Figure 5).
In most cases, uncoated carbide grades are all that is required. Aluminum is easy to cut and the added expense for any type of coating to improve wear life usually is hard to justify.
However, when very high-speed machining is being performed, PCD inserts brazed with poly-crystalline diamond are the insert of choice because of the superior finish that can be produced at elevated speeds.

First, go here http://www.carbidedepot.com/formulas-insert-d.htm and look at what the letters and number mean. It's a very basic coding system that describes the geometry, relief angles, chip breaker style but, it does not describe the coatings or hardness of the carbide.

The precise make-up of the insert and configuration of the chip breaker varies according to each model the manufacture makes. A company might make 15 different CCMT 3251 models. Some might have different coatings and different hardness to accommodate interrupted cutting. Also, they might make them with chip breakers tuned for various dept of cuts. The range for a CCMT is usually around 20 to 60 tho but, if the manufacturer says it's better for finish cutting, you see that the breaker range will be around 10 to 25 thou. If you go below or above the recommended range, the chip breaker won't be effective. Basically, you need to look at the specs of each model before making a decision.

For most folks, the basic style of a CCMT is fine for everything you want to do. Just select one with the right coating and correct chip-breaker range for the work you do. I often have two tool-holders for the common sizes. One for roughing and one for finishing.

It seems hard but, it's not once you understand what's going on.

The type of insert is dictated by the type of holder and the insert pocket, so if you are using 80 degree insert with a neutral insert pocket then you are looking primarily at CCxT type. Not sure about what a CCMG insert type is, looks like limited to YG inserts, but you would not use CNMG inserts in a neutral rake holder. So typically for ferrous metals you would use a molded insert which is more resistant to intermittent cuts/rough deep cutting because the edge profile is thicker and typically will have less positive edge rake. If you are cutting softer materials such as aluminum, cast iron, brass, plastic, etc. then you typically would want a ground edge profile with more positive edge rake, so CCGT. The latter is usually uncoated, highly polished and may have some chip control features. I typically use a 32.51 type insert, a 32.52 has a larger nose profile used for deeper cuts/heavier cuts. Typically I get 3-6 months out of an insert, but depends on the use/material.

I find that the cheaper generic type inserts like Cobra do not last, so I try to stick with more mainstream manufactures. The biggest problem these days is that most of what comes out of Asia is counterfeit.

On the type of insert/coatings it is often dependent on the materials you are primarily using it for. If you do harder metals or stainless then you may want a specific insert type (profile and chip breaker) /coating of insert indicated for those metals. If you do a wide range of metals then I would focus on two type of inserts for a particular insert shape as follows:
