My tool angel comes through again ...

This is actually from last year when I was back in WI for 6 months dealing with my dads and brothers estates. Shelly, a young lady who buys from auctions, and sells on E-bay and Craigs list, several times a year e-mails me that she has some things for me that she wants to get rid of. Being that I was out of town, I arranged to have a friend pick it up for me until I returned. He came over for dinner last night and brought the things from her with him. Got a chance to go trough it today and found some very useful things. Quite a few new, or like new end mills, reamers, boring bars, tool holders, index-able cutters, and miscellany. Spent about an hour cleaning up the plastic containers the stuff came in. Probably should have thrown them out, but I have a hard time with that, and they came out ok. The larger tooling should work well on my newly acquired Gorton horizontal/vertical mill. Two of the cutters have some damage, but may be salvagable, and for free I'm not about to complain. Will make a seperate post on the clean up of the 4x4 angle plate in the pics below. Any help identifying the the tool in the last few pics would be appreciated, it is designed to hold 14 inserts. Two of insert screw heads are broken off, but shouldn't be too hard to get out. Cheers, Mike

Your last tools, multiple inserts remind me strongly of some "boring bars" I used to repair. They mounted (as yours may have) in the center of a 'cathead', about 14 inches in diameter with varying faces, for first op machining on disc brakes discs. The boring bars to to do first op cleanup for the bearing seats, inboard and outboard. That's not to say what yours are/were for, but some similar operation.
That's quite a haul, and for free, too.
 
Free tools, and ones you can use....doesn't get any better. Bless the tool angel.

Agreed. That tool is a monster, and was perhaps driven by machines that have the rigidity to climb mill with it. The illustration could also just be incorrect. Regardless, Tom is correct. Don't try this at home!
 
Tom, Bob, thanks for the info on the cutter. The Gorton mill has a top speed of 2000 rpm, so not ideal, but perhaps with a much reduced feed rate it might work out ok. Will be interesting to see how much the appropriate inserts cost. Thanks, Mike

Yes, Without looking, I think the diameter is around 1-1/8, and the mill spindle is 10hp, so I don't think it should be an issue. I will have to adapt it to a cat 50 tool holder. Haven't really had the time to look into that end of it yet. My wife has a long list of things for me (for both of us really) to do, but I do try to find a few ours here and there to work on some of the things I really want to be doing. Cheers, Mike
