I have the digital (cd rom) version of Machinery's Handbook edition #27, which requires Adobe Reader to open & use.

I don't like Adobe because it seems to slow my (already slow) computer down.

Does anyone know of a way to use Machinery's Handbook with Foxit Reader (or another low-resource pdf reader)? I tried messing around with the "File Open" plug-in for Foxit but I don't really know what I am doing and haven't gotten anywhere. I still get the error message that "this document is unsupported by an encryption handler".

I asked Industrial Press (publisher) via email but haven't gotten a response.

Thanks

I use evince, which may or may not exist on your platform, but in general any PDF reader *should* work with it.

Sounds like it's encrypted, which might only work with the Adobe reader. Someone posted this link to a normal PDF on Internet Archive a while back.

ttabbal - that link seems to work great on my computer. Thanks.
And I think you are right that the encryption will only work with Adobe Reader. I've tried it with several other readers over the years and have never gotten it to work with anything except Adobe.

I use Phantom PDF from Foxit. Works fine. I hate Adobe too.

I am running Windows Pro 7 64 bit. I had Phantom awhile back and I couldn't get it to work either. MH 27 on disc had a weird encryption file that had to be read (added, used?) by the pfd reader, that was issued after registration by MH. Some goofy thing that I always had trouble with.

Edition 30 is designed to be read by generic pdf readers. I just found this out from Industrial press, who answered my email and confirmed that they could not get edition 27 to work with anything else but Abobe - even though they have tried too! They suggested I use edition 30 (they didn't say BUY edition 30 or suggest how I should go about obtaining that edition)!!

The link above works for me and since I paid full retail for edition 27 and can't get it to work I don't feel like a pirate for using edition 30 that does work.

ttabbal has solved my problem for me so this case is closed!

FYI I'm using MH 29. Guess I got lucky.
Maybe it is just MH 27?

Here is a copy of the email I got from Industrial Press: "
The MH27 program, which as you may know is 14+ years old, requires Adobe Reader or Acrobat to run. I have recently tried to work with another user to use a version of the newer MH29 with Foxit Reader and failed, so I do not think it will work with the MH27. The previous customer wrote me that he installed an Adobe Reader and created a shortcut somehow linking the Reader to the Handbook and was able to maintain Foxit Reader as the default for other documents. More simply, other customers right click on the MH30 program/icon, and do "Open With" and select the Adobe Reader; with some operating systems, after a few times, it may remember the default program.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the combination you would prefer. If your issue is that you don't want to use the Adobe products, the ebook version of the MH30 uses a proprietary reader that comes with the ebook.

Let me know if I can help further. "

SO I guess I've been trying on and off for around 14 years and have to agree with her!
