Check price first, LOL

I've done that same thing,

I swear it is a practice at steel yards to hit people who don't ask.
I have made steel runs that were very similar with VERY different price tags.

I used pallet racking for my mill drill stand . Worked really well and it was free , I saved several some were made of c channel about 3/16" wall thickness. Any time I see metal I drag it in my wheelchair back home . Had some very heavy angle iron 1/2" thick walled in 3x3 and 4x4 . Picking that stuff up and years of spinal abuse is what put me in bed now going on three years. My muscles were stronger then my back. And I'm telling you I've really suffered and no doubt will till I'm dead.

I had a similar experience last week on a small scale getting two *one inch* slices of a 5"OD pipe. Like yours, it was 1/4" wall thickness. They told me it would run over twenty five bucks, so I bumped it down to two 1/2" slices for $15. Insignificant amount in my case, but I can't imagine what would happen if you went in to get a few feet worth and didn't know what to expect. I doubt the average person buys pipe by the slice.

I hope this stuff doesn't get much higher too fast.

The place I got the pipe wouldn't do that, but I had a machine shop I stopped dealing with many years ago who was horrible on it. The last time, I got about an 8' stick of some square tubing similar to what the OP bought (maybe 1.5"). The guy was writing up my bill and I noticed him stop about halfway and look down the counter at me for a minute, like he was studying me. I think he was trying to pinpoint the maximum price point just before I would say "F you" and walk out. Unfortunately, he was rather skilled at it and must have landed about fifty cents below the threshold.

Lets be careful out there.
