I've seen a few ideas around that didn't quite suit my needs so cobbled this one and it works better than expected. Half thau indicator hardly moves. Picture is self explanatory for the most part. Non of the parts are milled dead nuts. But there is a short channel underneath the washers that allows quick initial adjustment, after which you can position the vise anywhere on the table. Hope it helps someone 20180724_132922.jpg

I see that the verticals are keyed on the end of the horizontal. Also your set up length is about twice the width of the jaws.

Yup yup, again nothing fancy, it's .5" x1.5" stock, what I happened to have lying around. One pass of half inch end mill gave me good enough of a slot to keep the verticals from wabbling as I'm tightening the screw.

HHmmm, interesting concept. What is your repeatability?

Right on so far! I do check it every time, and it takes me under a minute to set it and check it. My mill a about a thou off just about every where. Milling something super accurately is possible but daunting, so I resort to adjustability .

I've always just used my indicator in a tool holder and my plastic dead blow .
I still use the indicator to make sure, just don't have to reach for the hammer any more :) I'm just a beginner so I like to make things even of questionable usefulness just to see if my understanding of the process is correct. This one turnded out alright

On my Tormach 770, only the center slot is specified as precision ground parallel to the x axis. The remaining two are probably close but no guarantee. My old mill/drill has milled surfaces but not ground. Never assume. Trust but verify.

Learned that the hard way! My mill is small only 14" x 6" x 12" travel so the vise moves a lot.
