The Z axis hand wheel on my B&S 2B surface grinder is only graduated in 1/2 thousands and rather than guesstimating on 10ths I found myself mounting my mag base on the column with my tenths indicator. This got old quick. I've got a couple of tenth's indicators I wasn't using so I made up a permanent mount with a fine screw adjust that I can easily/quickly swing in and out and position it when needed.

The 1/2" round rod is out of an old dot matrix printer that was scrapped out. I made it fairly heavy because when measuring 10ths you want a very rigid setup. I basically copied the design used on my vernier height gauge. The large dial Mitutoyo tenths indicator is accurate, very easy to see/read and has some decent travel.

Works great!

Good suggestion. I'll most likely keep the indicator up high and drop a plastic bag over it where it will stay most of the time until needed. I only need it for fine moves.

Yep, after playing with it this afternoon, it takes about as long to cover it as it does just to remove it, so that seems the logical way to go! I think I have a couple nice brass thumb screws someplace if I can find them...
