Agree, I use a level on the flat portion of the boring head and lock the quill while watching the bubble.

I've used a small 3 inch sine bar on the compound similar to this method:

Next time I need to cut a an accurate taper using the compound, I'm going to try Joe's method below:

Hi Gi, the boring head is on a 2MT shaft. It gets twisted slightly sometimes when you push it into the tailstock taper. There isn't any rotational slop in the tailstock sleeve. In fact it could do with the key easing a fraction.
