Good afternoon guys, awhile back there was someone here who sold Igage readouts at a very good price but don't guess he's around. So wanted to ask the members if anyone has any experiences with this model which is suppose to be very accurate.
iGaging 38" Absolute Digital Readout DRO Stainless Steel Super High Accuracy w/Remote Reading

The person who I want to get this for is a machinist by trade which he uses his lathe at home pretty regular.I see the cable that runs from the reader to the Read out which kinda concerns me about hot swarfs. What is ya'll thought on this and any ideals about protecting the cable?

I have Igaging on my mill. I've no problem with swarf and the cabling. It's ok strictly for hobby use. For my lathe I went with a used DRO, which I've yet to install . I don't think the Igaging scales are accurate enough, and I'm not working to NASA standards. A lot of guys like them though. It gets me in the ballpark on my mill but anything precise I measure with the needed tool(s) during/after cutting.

It's been discussed before and most feel you should buy heavier duty scales and dro on aliexpress.

I started off with digital scales on my lathe, OK but not a patch on a real DRO with multiple zeros and tool offsets.

That is about what I have on my lathe, My mill I have better glass scales on xyz

If you're serious about helping your machinist out with a DRO, I'd suggest looking in to the TouchDRO system. I have one and love it.

Basically, you mount the slide parts (scales) to the lathe and connect them to an arduino. The Arduino then communicates via bluetooth to a phone or tablet - a 10" tablet is cheap and makes for a nice big display - and the tablet is running the TouchDRO free software.

This system has all of the features of very expensive professional DRO but at a fraction of the cost. Very easy to set up; the hardest part is mounting the slides to the lathe but that would be the case with the El Cheapo thing you mentioned above.

touch-dro is what I have and it works great I am just securing the dro with magnets from hard drives work good does get swarf stuck to it that I blow off.
