Hi all, i have the machining handbooks for milling, lathe, and advance work. Book example. In those books everything is metric numbers and also has types of material I've never heard of except for cast iron. Has anyone heard of these and can tell me what type of material it is or one of the easier ways to maybe find this material? Perhaps even substitutions for it.

Also another question i have is i am making a spindle for a dividing head and i was curious if cast iron would be ok for that? I know i am making a ER20 collet head for my lathe out of cast iron so i would just like opinions.

Well from what im reading i guess i could get away with making most of the projects with any of the 3 and be ok preferably have 1215 for any bushings though if able.

Cast iron is the very last choice that you would make for a spindle or collet nose, a free machining carbon steel would be the better choice, and for the collet nose, a hardenable or pre hardened alloy steel would be a better choice.

Think 1144 stressproof would work good for a collet nose?

4140/4142 heat treat would be the choice I'd make. Tough and not too difficult to machine.
