Hi out there, I'm looking for a pin vise that I can use in my die grinder to convert the 1/8 spindle collet to a 1/4 spindle collet - all that I have found convert the other way, from large to small. Also be able to use in my lathe chuck (need straight shank). All help & advice appreciated.

What type of die grinder are you using? Mine all take 1/4”

It’s going to be hard to find something that goes up in size since bigger tools require more power. Have you searched for the tooling you need with a 1/8” shank? Either that or get/build a mount for a larger die grinder that adapts to your tool post.

You might consider a milling spindle with an ER collet built in.

What tools are you trying to use?

I've been using Dremel grinding wheels, but there is only a limited amount of sizes/grits available. What I was hoping for was a straight shank collet-type holder to use for holding small round stock & to hold small dia work pieces for 2nd operation machining. Example: making a small special machine screw with unique head. Perhaps ER collet system would work, but that gets too pricey for what I need - one-off pieces & used very infrequently.

A 1/4" electric die grinder will cost $40 from HF. Heck a 1/4" air die grinder is only $10 from HF. Won't be as good a real tool post grinder but they'll give you better results than a pencil die grinder. There's a reason why why they don't make larger size grinding stones for 1/8" shank. You could always turn down the shank of a 1/4" shank stone to 1/8"to try.

I've found that if you locate the right industrial hardware store you can get an amazing assortment of tools. When I was porting go-kart heads I used 1/8 shank arbors with different sanding disks and cones, Huntington Beach used to be an aerospace center so maybe they have such a store, check around to see if there's a place that might have suitable tools. Otherwise upsize the grinder for better selection.

Cheers,

John

OK, here's a possible solution to your dilemma. I just got a new MicroMark catalog and was paging through it with your need for 1/4" shank tools in mind. Nearly everything they sell goes up to 1/8". But I did see a pin vise with 1/4" capability. It's their part number 21106 ($12.95) https://www.micromark.com/Heavy-Duty-Pin-Vise

If you have access to a lathe, there are two ways you could modify the pin vise to work with your rotary tool.
(1) Cut off the handle and turn down the shank to 1/8"
(2) cut off the handle, then drill & tap into the cut end of the shank to fit over the nose of your rotary tool. Dremel tools have a 9/32"-40 thread on their noses. I've actually done this to some HF 1/2" shank slot cutting router bits that I adapted for use on a Dremel. Bought the taps from VME. Tap drill size is #F.
