Finally got a Gerstner and Sons box!

I bought a new Gerstner shortly after I went to work for Fred in '79. When I told him I'd ordered one, he told me that he'd never seen a machinist worth a d*mn who owned one. They were all show, no go. Mine is now an over-priced document and jewelry box, it's never been in the shop or had a tool in it.

MrWhoopee,

Will have to say there are many of thousands of machinist's that made things fly in the sky and in space that owned Gerstner's. I've seen it first hand, so maybe some of them are worth a damn. Gerstners can be beautiful boxes and lets face it, it's nice to have some wood in a metal shop. They have there purpose for some, to each is own. I myself tremendously prefer my Vidmars and Lista's but they don't really make bench top boxes and I will say I have a Harbor Freight Pro cabinet that I open and close many times a day and I like it but it's not as pretty as a quarter sawn or walnut Gerstner.

Lets give Technical Ted a thumbs up and a You Suck for his purchase, it's a very nice box.

i have 2 gerstners #52 paid $900.00 for the first one with measuring instruments that look pretty much like those in the above picture i figured above $3000.00 to replace the box contents. the second # 52 i paid $200.00 for. i also have a Pillod made in Swanton oh. . paid $20.00 for it.. i see a lot of gerstners for sale for very outlandish prices. but i don't think any used gerstners are worth much more than $250.00. i think that there are more for sale than there are people looking for them. oh, 2 weeks ago i bought a kenneny #526 for $160.00 NEW . a local hardware store was going out of business; it had been there for a long time. they had it priced at retail $345.00. the current retail is around $440.00. i like tool boxes.

I just watched Adam Booth's video of the tour he took of the plant. Made me drool.

I bought my big Gerstner box back in the late '60s; only paid $76 then (new); wages were $5/hr then, still a bargain compared to new prices today
